clear compostable biodegradable packaging supplies

clear compostable biodegradable packaging supplies

C6 Clear Biodegradable Display Bags
all our clear display bags are Nativia® bio film, EN13432 + OK BIOBASED. they have not achieved OK compost HOME standard, as they do not degrade in the UK in the designated 6 month standard (due to the climate)

It is becoming increasingly difficult to source home compostable film for our clear biodegradable display bags, and it seems that the industry standard, and most accessible material is now Nativia ® film, a clear, compostable, biodegradable, vegan friendly bio film (PLA) manufactured in the uk, which is best suited to industrial composting.

Nativia® bio film is  still certified according to the EN13432 standard and have achieved the OK BIOBASED certificate from Vincotte, which means they are still plastic free and compostable.

it just does not hold the OK compost HOME standard (2003) – basically, it’s not guaranteed to break down in the UK in your garden composting system inside of the 6 month standard.

**Enough of the jargon – read more about the certifications mentioned above here**

what is  Nativia ® film?

Nativia is made up of a mixture of (vegan friendly) vegetable starches and and wood pulp (or cellulose) – our glassine bags are 100% cellulose (or 100% paper, which is biodegradable, compostable and recyclable)

whilst Nativia® is certified compostable to the highest standards, the words compostable and biodegradable are often confusing to the end user. most would assume that if a product is compostable or biodegradable it will just ‘disappear’ leaving little to no impact (like our glassine bags). however for the guaranteed ‘break down’ of these PLAs to take place, most products need to be industrially composted in specialist plants, which is the recommended method of disposal for  Nativia®.

our previous stocks were suitable for home composting, which meant they would breakdown in accordance with the OK compost HOME standards.

disposing of clear compostable biodegradable bags

how to dispose of clear Nativia ® compostable bags

Nativia ® film should be placed in a black bin, or can be disposed of in food waste or garden waste, but you will need to check with your local council, and independent tests have shown that the film has degraded in a home composting system in the UK, in 12 months –  however since it takes longer than the 6 months required to achieve the OK compost HOME certification, we can no longer classify this product as home compostable

what’s the difference between home composting & industrial composting?

home composting occurs in your back garden, some people purchase compost bins to dispose of their own household organic waste, and some people, if they have a big enough garden, have compost heaps.

industrial composting takes place in specialist plants, applying a much higher heat, which accelerates the process.

home composting = low temperature, product doesn’t break down as quickly

industrial composting = hotter, quicker breakdown

home compostable products carry a OK compost HOME certification, which guarantees they break down in a certain amount of time, including in a home compost bin.

Why does this all matter so much?!

biodegradable compostable recyclable stickers for use with clear biodegradable bags

with the rise in demand for eco friendly packaging solutions, we feel it’s important to highlight the change to our products, and ensure we give you, the consumer, all the information to make sustainable choices. whether you decide to go for a paper based product, a PLA or even a recyclable product.

XOandQuin pride ourselves on our eco friendly credentials, we feel that the most important part of our ethos is to provide, easy to understand guidance on how to choose the right product for you and your business or eco friendly party needs!

here in the UK we currently have limited access to industrial composting, XOandQuin have always felt that the look of clear compostable display bags, can be misleading to the end user, many people I would assume add these to main stream recycling (where councils offer a mixed recycling option).

PLAs  can NOT be recycled, adding them to recycling can cause the whole stream to become ‘tainted’. most of our clear compostable biodegradable packaging supplies now have printed lips that read “this bag is made in the UK from EN13432 compostable PLA” – however we do recommend adding an additional sticker to further inform end users on how to dispose of the product.

What’s the most eco packaging option you offer?

our glassine products are made from pure pine cellulose (100% PEFC certified paper from pine trees) – paper is recyclable, compostable and biodegradable. if disposed of in a black bin, it will break down and leave no residue….eventually. if in doubt our glassine is the most environmentally friendly packaging option on the market and the easiest to dispose of.

#SLOWVEMBER

sorry there will be no black friday, no small business saturday and no cyber monday from team xoandquin – because we’re AWESOME and running #slowvember (it’s totally a thing)

november, let’s face it is is horrid and hectic, there are sales and unnecessary impulse purchases, if you’re a small business, then you’ll be desperately trying to predict how much you need of which packing supplies.

if you’re trying to complete your christmas shop for your family and friends are you frantically adding things you *may* need to your cart, only to find they’ll sit in the drawer for a year, and ultimately be forgotten, with slowvember you have all month to take advantage of our 20% off deal. if you forget someone, just pop on back over, we’re not going anywhere!

to relieve the pressure, we’re running a standard sale throughout november, so you can shop slowly, browse, take your time, enjoy browsing our products and decide, without pressure, shop only what you need, love and want!

i’m not going to pretend that I’m boycotting black friday, i like every other business, want to maximise sales during this quarter, however, backloading all the sales into the end of the month isn’t something I would like to actually do.

i don’t want people overloading their baskets, stretching themselves and buying things they don’t need or want, just because it was a good deal – i want every purchase to be thought out, calculated and people to only take what they need.

i am also aware we never go on sale, our prices have been calculated to be the best we offer, so here we go….

these suggestions are based on last year’s posting dates, until last royal mail posting dates christmas 2021 are released by royal mail, this is to enable you to decide when to post/cut off

XOandQuin have estimated the dates that will be released as the last royal mail posting dates christmas 2021, followed by our recommendation below in italic, based on previous experience.

XOandQuin recommend that royal mail 1st and 2nd class untracked services (including delivery confirmation and OBA 48 and 24), you allow up to 10 working days. we estimate a 60-70% valid tracking rate on the door step for 2d barcodes and 48/24

xoandquin do not use royal mail special delivery at all, as the royal mail delivery rate falls short of our expectations which causes customer disappointment.

International suggested last royal mail posting dates christmas 2021

international last royal mail posting dates christmas 2020

this table shows the last royal mail posting dates christmas 2020 international delivery, they will be pretty similar (or next working day for 2021)

based on our experience, non-peak delivery times with royal mail international standard and international tracked international* transit times:

canada & new zealand – up to 30 working days
australia, other european and rest of the world – up to 21 working days (royal mail often also have a habit of sending australia mail to austria)
usa – xoandquin generally advise usa customers that transit time is 10-15 working days, mail can however arrive in as few as 5-7. we would advise allowing 21 working days.

main eu countries – this is totally uncharted due to brexit, ioss and import duties and charges, allow up to 15-30 working days, strongly recommend only sending tracked or with a courier and appropriate insurance

*please note that tracked does not speed up the transit time of your delivery, it merely provides end to end tracking, however when mail arrives in it’s destination country it is passed to the local carrier, which may or may not be able to provide accurate tracking. in some instances where mail has been returned or refused, due to duty you may find tracking has halted completely and a parcel will arrive a few months later back with you.

comments and questions are welcome below, and don’t forget to pin if  you found it useful!

food grade vs food safe – what’s the difference?

why do you need to know the difference?

There is lots of different legislation around the world about what materials, containers and substances are suitable for food storage. All of these rules make sure that by the time food gets to us, it’s in the condition it was meant to be in and it’s completely safe to eat. Seems fair, right?

In most countries the rules are pretty much the same – so you don’t need to worry about whether France will have a problem with food bags that are perfectly fine in Australia. When you sell packaged food, you need to know if your packaging is right for what’s inside it.

While you do your research on the best solution for you, you’re bound to come across two phrases: food grade and food safe. While they both sound like they mean the same thing, there’s a subtle difference between the two.

Take notes because there might be a quiz at the end!

what is food grade?

Food grade includes any packaging that is suitable to come into direct contact with food. Food grade materials make sure that whatever is found inside is protected from unwanted substances, unwelcoming to bacteria and free of toxins.

At XOandQuin all of our biodegradable bags and glassine envelopes are made from a food grade material. Usually packaging classified as food grade would be used for anything that is intended to be sold loose (i.e. not in factory sealed packs). An example of a food grade product are the bread bags you see hanging in the bakeries, for your baked goods like cakes and biscuits.

Food grade packaging simply means that it is absolutely fine to use as food storage.

what is food safe?

Food safe packaging is made from food grade material and created for a finished sealed product. When something is food safe it is certified as safe for its intended use. It takes into consideration things like the temperature and length of time the food is stored in its packaging.

Anything removed from food safe packaging cannot be returned once the seal has been broken for hygiene and safety reasons. It’s also vital that the item is stored in suitable conditions, especially if the packaging is also biodegradable.

At XOandQuin we sell one food safe product – Nativia® bags, which are available in factory sealed bags of 250.

can you repeat that?

Food grade: can be used as food storage.

Food safe: food grade and made specifically for the contents found inside.

For most small businesses selling food online or on stalls, food grade packaging will suit your needs. In the instances where you know that food safe packaging is needed to preserve quality, we find that Nativia® bags are the best solution.

can X go in XOandQuin food safe bags?

We would love to make a list of the many foods that you can store in our biodegradable bags, glassine envelopes and Nativia® bags, but the list would literally go on forever.

Our food grade packaging material is suitable for most foods that need to be stored in cool, dry conditions. All of our biodegradable bags and envelopes are self sealing, making them easy to store food in them securely – away from unwanted particles and bacteria. If that sounds like what you need, the only other thing you need to do is find the right size for your goods.
